As the sun sets and the sweltering temperatures begin to subside, just a tiny bit, the dancers come out in Cartagena. In Plaza Bolivar, there are performances most evenings by Afrocolombian dance troupes. The energetic drumming is like a siren call, ringing through the colonial streets, drawing onlookers from across the old city to witness the spectacle. It’s a celebration of the African roots of the people that live along the Caribbean coast, drumming and dancing the language of their ancestors.
